AC Specifications – Sound Levels

YCC #35 Air Conditioning specifications include a maximum sound rating number (SRN).  This number, listed in dBA, is an A-weighted combination of the dB (decibel) levels of all octave bands, measured in accordance to ARI Standard 270-95.  This is the HVAC industry standard as determined by the American Refrigeration Institute (ARI).  All major manufacturers test and publish the SRN for their units in accordance with this standard.

The standard does not specify a maximum “measured” sound level at each of the seven (7) individual octave bands, but rather the A-weighted sound power of all the octaves combined.

For example, a unit with a published A-weighted sound rating number of 76 dBA, would have measured sound levels similar to the following chart:

Octave  (Hz) 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000 8000
Sound (dB) 50.5 61.0 67.0 68.0 65.0 60.0 55.5

YCC 35 specifications call for the Standard A-weighted sound rating number to be 69 dBA or lower, which result in measured sound levels similar to the following.

Octave  (Hz) 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000 8000
Sound (dB) 50.0 56.0 57.0 59.0 54.0 47.0 43.0
